How To Tap In To Your Spirituality In Midlife: Your Menopause As A Spiritual Journey

Has your menopause been a spiritual journey?
From a biological and physiological standpoint menopause is a physical process marking the end of a woman’s menstrual cycle. The physical changes and symptoms are often the main focus in discussions around menopause. Whilst these undoubtedly play a major part in our menopause experience and need careful attention, understanding and medical guidance, there is also a spiritual side to this special time of life.

Beyond the physical symptoms, menopause can be a deeply transformative journey.  It has the possibility to extend beyond the physical and into our spiritual essence encompassing  body, mind and spirit. Taking a holistic approach to menopause involves exploring our mind, body and spirit during this phase of our lives.

Body

The list of symptoms that are associated with peri menopause and menopause is long and growing as research continues. There is much we can do to take care of and support our physical health with nutrition, exercise and sleep as part of a healthy lifestyle. Building in good daily habits in these areas and taking an active part in maintaining our physical health helps us understand our body and what it needs to function well. A daily yoga practice can help maintain strength, flexibility and self awareness of mind, body and spirit.

Mind

During menopause brain fog, poor memory, increased anxiety levels and mood swings can be tough to handle. Good sleep hygiene and mindfulness practices along with meditation can bring relief to many of these symptoms, some of which are caused by increased stress hormones. It makes sense that engaging in activities such as mindfulness and developing a regular meditation practice can offer relief in this area.

Spirit

Tapping into our spiritual side can bring transformation in menopause. Instead of considering it as an ending, seeing it as a pause, a gateway into a powerful new phase of life can help us redefine this period of life as an opportunity for spiritual growth.  A time to reflect on life this far, to leave regrets behind and  practice self-compassion. We can consider our life’s purpose and take steps towards a life aligned with that purpose.

Exploring and connecting with various  spiritual perspectives on midlife and menopause can be enlightening and I have personally enjoyed diving into the spiritual aspects of midlife. Becoming curious was the first step and from there things fell into place and made so much sense to me.

A Sacred Passage

Consider menopause as a sacred passage, a transition from one phase of life to another. It marks the end of the reproductive years and the beginning of a new chapter. Celebrating this with a ritual to honour this transition can be meaningful. It’s a time to honor the cycles of nature, the rhythms of life, and the interconnectedness of all beings. Ritual is used to mark many occasions and rites of passage in our lives, so why not midlife. Marking it with a beautiful ritual whether personally or with others can open us up to the spiritual side of this phase of life.

Connection to the Divine Feminine

In many spiritual traditions, menopause is associated with the archetype of the Wise Woman or the Crone, symbolizing wisdom, experience, and the deep connection to the divine feminine. Embracing this archetype can empower us to embrace the wisdom and spiritual gifts that come with age. Choosing an archetype to work with and explore in our own lives can be a tool to dive a little deeper into our own being.

A time to Reflect

Menopause often prompts us to reflect deeply on our lives, our purpose, and our spiritual journey. It can be a time of introspection, self-discovery, and spiritual awakening. Yoga and reiki are two ways that I deepen myself reflection practice and have the potential to deepen our connection to ourselves and our role in the universe.

A time to Release

Menopause is a natural process of letting go of the reproductive years and embracing a new stage of life. From a spiritual perspective, it is an opportunity to release old patterns, beliefs, and attachments that no longer serve our highest good. Making room for things that are aligned with and support our journey through midlife and beyond.

Spiritual practices can help honour and tap into the wisdom and gifts of this stage of life. Yoga, reiki and mindfulness are beautiful tools for transformation. Along with other reflection tools such as oracle cards, tarot & journaling. Connecting deeply with nature and our inner wisdom to honour and acknowledge this phase of life can give a deeper understanding of ourselves and an appreciation of this transformative stage of life. This is the path I have taken and in my experience, finding your own midlife magic is a journey worth taking.
