Embracing The Energy Of Autumn and Finding Alignment
Release the struggle, let go of Summer, embrace Autumn and feel aligned with the energy of the season.
The change in seasons brings about a beautiful transformation in nature, daily, I spend as much time out in nature observing these changes and reflecting on how they can help me in my routines. As a nature lover and yoga teacher, I have always been inspired by the connection between our internal energy and the cycles of the world around us. Autumn, with its crisp air, falling leaves, and a sense of transition, is a season that I love. But alongside this love of autumn, a part of me is hanging onto the summer, with a feeling that I’m not ready for the darkness of the winter months that are just around the corner.
Over the years – especially years spent living in Norway I have created intentional practices to help me through the transition from vibrant fall to the darker days and longer nights of winter. I have learned and am still learning, how to embrace and honour the energy of autumn through connecting with the natural rhythm of this season so that I can transition to winter with more ease and less resistance. Its a great opportunity to find alignment in your daily routines and practices.
A season of releasing
Energetically Autumn is a season that encourages us to let go and create space for new beginnings. Nature teaches us that the act of releasing something opens the door to something new and beautiful to begin. It can be helpful to use this season as an opportunity to release old habits, physical, mental or emotional that you don’t want to carry with you into a new season.
Discover the beauty in letting go
When we get intentional about what is useful to release from our lives we allow ourselves to realign with our values, to what we want and need to live in balance. As we let go of things that are no longer serving us we make space to create something new, something that may be more in alignment with our goals and dreams.
Gratitude for abundance in our lives
Taking the time to celebrate all that we have and give gratitude for this is another beautiful way recognising natures gifts with the final harvest celebration that falls at this time. Sharing our gratitude with close friends and family is a lovely way to celebrate the abundance of the season.
There are many tools and routines that help embrace the autumn energies. Here are some of the ways I lean into the season of autumn.
Journaling
Journaling can help us recognise what we want to release and also get clear on what we want to invite more of into our life. You get to decide. Its empowering to release something and to intentionally make space for the things that really matter.
Move more
Dance, walk, run, shake out stuck, old energy from your body. Physical movement allows tired, old, energy, emotions, thoughts and aches and pains to start moving out of the body. So make time for some intentional movement, you wont regret it.
Keep a daily yoga practice
Establish a regular time for your yoga practice, whether you practice at home alone or in community as part of a class. A regular routine helps keep you on track. I make time for my yoga first thing in the morning otherwise it often doesn’t happen for me. Commit to a regular time that you will go to your mat and move and breathe. It doent have to be long, complicated or fancy to have a profound influence on how you start your day. Additionally commit to a weekly class if you can, this helps keep you accountable and on track.
Try and incorporate some yoga asanas that help reflect the energy of the season. For autumn think sacral chakra and invite some pleasure into your practice. Think hip openers especially.
Some of my favourite poses to include for autumn are
- Goddess pose
- Seated Cat/Cow
- Seated torso circles
- 3 Legged dog
- Lunges
- Warrior ll for strength and stability and groundedness
- Child pose
Meditate
Spend a little time figuring out a meditation practice that works for you. This can be as simple as a following the breath technique, choosing a guided meditation or using mantra, use whatever you feel resonates best for you. Again find a time to add it to your day and stick to it. Commuting is a great time to include meditation (but not if you are driving!) I often sneak in an extra session by taking a short walk at lunch time or finding a quiet corner to sit and get quiet for a few minutes. Once you experience the positive effects of this practice you won’t look back.
Yoga Nidra
Try yoga nidra for deep relaxation. Yoga nidra is an effective way to release tension, worry and stress and to support your immune system. We could all do with a little help at this time of year and I have a yoga nidra for you to try here.
