How Rituals Can Benefit Your Life
This month I’m focusing on bringing more rituals into my life. Its something I do whenever I want to establish a new routine. Routines equal repetition which we need and rituals add meaning to these routines. Whether it be an earlier bedtime, starting a gratitude practice, fitting in an extra yoga practice, adding another meditation in my day or eating in a more healthy way. Its a message to myself, a reminder that I’m prioritising this improvement to my wellness.
Using Rituals To Add Meaning To Your Routines
New healthy routines, can often start full of motivation, only to find that months, weeks or even days later our new routine has got a little lost along the way?
Adding a little ritual into your life can help you establish new routines and also make them more likely to become a regular part of your daily life.
In essence when we bring a little sacredness into our lives, we make it important and we honour something, recognising the positivity and value it adds to our day. My morning routine has become my sacred space, the time I get to settle into my body, mind and spirit at the start of each new day. Yes, I get up earlier but I wouldnt trade the extra sleep for the greater positivity and joy that my morning ritual provides. It gives me the energy and space to decide how I want to show up in the day ahead. It has transformed the way I go through my day.
Making room for a little ritual in your day is like a balm, it’s soothing, relaxing and de-stressing.
Including a ritual around something you really want to invite into your life can be quick and easy. Rituals indicate that we value, celebrate and are grateful for things in our lives and when we become more aware of those feelings we start to feel greater gratitude for them and therefore want to prioritise them.
Simple Ways To Create Rituals In Your Day
Here are some ideas I’ve tried and loved.
Develop a morning ritual – Set up a set space for the activity you want to add to your daily routine, have everything you need ready the night before and if possible leave it there all the time. I have my yoga mat laid out ready with a candle waiting to be lit and a special playlist I have created. I walk straight to my mat before I do anything else. I love doing yoga like this and thats part of the success.
Start Journaling – Make this sacred by having a beautiful journal or a special pen, light a candle and sit somewhere comfy. Again try and use the same space for this every time. Healthy Eating – Take a moment of gratitude for your food and to the effort of all the people and processes that led it to land in your kitchen. Bless your food before you eat it with a simple blessing. Bring your attention to what you are eating and over time you may become aware of healthier choices.
Gratitude everyday – Take time at the start and the end of each day to call to mind some of the things you are grateful for. Place your hand on your heart, take a deep breath and feel truly grateful.
Add a tea ceremony to your day – use a beautiful cup and treat yourself to an energising cup of green tea. Spend 5 minutes really appreciating the tea, close your eyes and take some cleansing, grounding breaths before returning to your tasks.
When creating rituals, remember
- Start small
- Make a daily commitment
- Make it something you enjoy
There are so many rituals to choose from, have fun creating your own to suit your dreams and desires.
Pretty soon you may find yourself enjoying the benefits of including rituals in your life.
